I usually pride myself on being able to easily choose the top five or ten photos to share from an event, but there are just too many great memories from the country-western birthday party I shot last week! From the hosts’ surprise horseback entrance to the world-class band that kept everyone on the dance floor until the end of the night, I just can’t narrow down my favorite part. The crowds of small children playing cowboy ranks close to the top, through.
It was a real treat to spend the evening celebrating Nick’s 70th; the guest of honor enjoyed himself too, surrounded by friends and family and celebrating with an energy that my younger self envied.
After my marathon of photo sessions in November 2014, I took a little break to get ready for and spend time with our first baby, who was born in February 2015. As it turned out, that little maternity leave turned into an unexpected (but welcome!) cross-country move, followed by Baby #2.
Two babies, 18 months apart, wearing the same heirloom christening set.
The great thing about being a photographer taking a break to spend time with my babies is that there’s really no break at all – there’s always a milestone or dimple to photograph, and no shortage of “practice time” with my two live-in models. Ten thousand photos or so later, I’m more confident than ever in my ability to capture your family’s special moments!
Now that we’ve adjusted to being a family of four, I’m excited to start booking photo sessions again. Sunny California affords many opportunities for year-round photography, and I’m harboring a (not so) secret wish to do a photoshoot in a citrus grove someday.
Contact me to schedule your portraits or event photography – my little assistants and I can’t wait to hear from you!
It’s always fun to photograph returning customers – I love seeing how everyone has changed in a year, and we have a great rapport already built up. I was delighted to have another session with the Newman extended family for the second year running. The kids were another year older, the adults another year wiser, and the color scheme they wore became one of my all-time favorites!
Some of the family had flown in from England for a visit, so it was great to be there to see cousins, sisters, aunts, uncles, grandma, and grandkids reunited.
I don’t know if I’m allowed to have favorite clients, but if I am, the Kosticks must be near the top of the list. I’ve done several photo sessions with their family, and it’s always a lot of fun. This session was a birthday gift for Mom, so everyone was on their best behavior. It was one of the coldest days I’ve ever shot photos on, but in true Minnesotan fashion, they were prepared for the weather, and we got some great photos (including some with a very neighborly horse!).
Just for comparison, here they are at our last session, and then this one:
Photographing newborns is always such a wonderful experience – I love being a fly on the wall as the new parents interact with the sweet little person as they get to know each other. Baby M and her parents were no exception. I loved everything about this session, but most of all this sweet little girl and the obvious love of her parents. Congratulations, Laura and Eric!
Jessica and Luis had an absolutely beautiful wedding in Minnesota! The weather was perfect, the dresses and flowers were gorgeous, but most of all, they’re so clearly in love. From their beautiful wedding Mass to the most spirited reception dance I’ve ever seen, It was an honor to be able to capture the beginning of their life together.
I love photographing families of all sizes, but there’s always something fun about doing a session with a large family! This session in beautiful Central Massachusetts was no exception – lots of energy, laughter, and a playmate for everyone. I’m excited to be able to share a little peek of our afternoon!
The big camera, that is. I took a trip to Philadelphia last week, and since I was there for my day job and didn’t want to carry my SLR around all week, I decided to seize the opportunity to document the trip in another way. I know I’m just about the last smartphone owner to get on Instagram, but I’m having fun using it: for starters, it’s quick and easy. It also challenges me to look at things in a different way, from the limitations of an iPhone camera to the fact that everything is going to get cropped to a square. Without further ado, here are some of my favorite photos from the trip.
There was a delightful number of scenes like these:
The ceiling of the oldest Catholic church in Philly:
I had to visit the standard tourist sites too, of course:
Finally, a beautiful sunrise for my last morning in the city:

I’ve been to lots of weddings, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a couple so excited to get married as Zak and Anna were this weekend! If they were stressed at all, it certainly didn’t show through the entire day; they and their entire wedding party were beaming all day. From the beautiful ceremony to the high-energy reception, their life together is off to a wonderful start. Congratulations and may you have many happy years together!
